Could Dave possibly have anything more to slay us with, from a drumming standpoint, besides CCEB1 [any], CCABA, Master Plan, Heads Up, Hard-Wired, Rhythm/Soul, Synergy, Trans, or Very/Plugged?! /;-P

I wish Vinnie had outboard gear beefing up his sound like Weckl, whose drums, regardless if it's session or leader, ALWAYS sound superlative.

The first few times I listened to the latest Mike Stern record, it seemed pretty lame and 'formulaic' to me....but after six or seven listens, it became one of my favourite records. Maybe I shouldn't be so quick to judge Weckl's new CD after hearing only three short snippets....my bad. [img]eek.gif[/img]

yeah i bought these times, listened once and i was like...:|...i only liked the first tune, chatter, but then someone on here pointed out mirage and i checked out and now i've really got into the record, its amazing!!!! i've got voices too, but havent checked it out properly, should give it a chance soon!

That's how I am with a lot of recordings. Listen once, not too impressed, then listen again later and wow, I didn't hear that before!

I think, for me it depends on how actively I'm listening. If it's in my car for the first go 'round I'll prob miss it, as the act of driving as automatic as it is sometimes, does tend to steal most of my attention. If it's late night at home with the phones on, it has my undivided attention. That's usually when I can be most objective with my listening. But I don't have that luxury very often with the pace I have to keep with the family, job and gigging. I'm usually sleeping when I can so most of my listening ends up in the car. If y'all don't like him; nobody's holding a gun to your heads to buy the new album. If it's too precise, hey it's like the TV; change the f*^%#^$ channel. I get tired of people saying the same shit about him just before the release of a new side, then the same folks come out and drop his name like he's some old friend after they hear it.

As for the tunes, not all the stuff is written by DW (and IMO the tunes aren't bad). Steve Weingart's contributions have been some marvelous springboards for improvisation (isn't that the essence of jazz composition in the first place?)as were Buzz Feiten's on the earlier things. I'm looking forward to hearing what Gary Meek will bring to the table as well. I've heard some of his stuff and it's great.

I've never been disappointed by any DW or DWB disc. L&VPI just killed me. Yes, the band does sound better live. I would hope so. Any artists that can't kick their own arses live shouldn't be on a stage.

I'm anticipating this release the same as I'm PATIENTLY awaiting word from VC that he will return to the studio to record VCII. I hope when that happens people don't start dis-ing him as well (he does too much off the wall shit or he sounds like Tony or maybe he plays too precise [img]wink.gif[/img] ). "Tweaked" isn't really much of a composition either. It was written as a joke. I LMAO when I first heard it. But let's admit it, it's fun to listen to and who's going to deny VC his indulgence? Not me. I want more and I want more DW too.

Gotta agree with Rythmatist.....

I think everyone will be very happy and surprised with the new CD. Gary is an amazing player and a great composer, just look at his own solo CD or his playing with Aierto and Flora. Steve's Weingardts CD blew my socks off when I played the 1st tune was actually a VERY funky straight ahead funk tune. The man is a grovemonkey at heart aside from all his Chick/Zawinol craziness. Both of these great players have donated to the writing process of this new CD.

My own opinion of course, and shared with Rhythmatist. After having the chance to sit down with the headphones and internalize what was going on in his recent past albums, I find the area's that make me understand his genius and his obvious talent in musical theory. Sure he's gonna blow on his own albums, as I would if I were at his caliber. But I wouldn't go as far as to say

"to the point of no feel, no grease, no emotion. The music is very poorly written in my opinion...... to show off his drum chops. To me this isn't music, it's a drum clinic all over again."

WOW!!! [img]eek.gif[/img]

I love Dave's ballads and the different global influences he brings to the styles of writing and playing. Not to mention his obvious great sounding drums, cymbals, and other combinations of gear.

Actually, my posts were more in jest...the last parag of my 1st one really says how i feel, as i tend to agree w R man on this one. I just can't find the place to bag on a cat like Weckl, of all people. The cat just plain continuously floors me in every aspect of the word. [img]eek.gif[/img]

Altho I can understand how certain folks may get tired of excessive listening to ANY one player, & perhaps some may prefer less 'precison' & more 'feel' or 'grease,' but, Precision IS his GAME. THAT's his bag. ASIDE from the mondo off-the-cuff phrasing, ridiculous technq, & catching those wicked hits/kicks. He DOES groove, it's just very attentive/stickler to the time. Nope. No bagging on Mr. W from my end. [img]wink.gif[/img] But i also listen to a hundred other drumrs, easy.

Besides i can think of many other drumrs who are way more "stiff" as they call it than he, for Gadd's sake. [Hint: some of the new chops/technq phreeks, even tho they too are indeed great at what they do!]...Don't make me name names & start another flame war... [img]tongue.gif[/img]

And yeah, he often does up the heavy ghost note deal, but he's just f'n great at it. & he can phlat groove simple & phat w the best of 'em AW. AND w precision timing. ;-)

No, he may or may not have the swing feel of say Elvin, Deej, Tain, or Philly, or the severe greasy funk feel of drumr 'X' [due mostly to the precision thing perhaps], or the authentic ethnic upbringing feel in latin [even he himself has stated that it's his 'gringo fusion' interpretation of it], but he's a brutal contempo fusion mixture of all the above, in his own way & approach. Different. Precise. Scary, evunn. ;-)

His solo discs are just ridiculous, as good as it gets, instrumentally. I'm one of his staunchest defenders. & he's one of my biggest influences, as he is to many another famous & great drumrs...[Can ya say, Tom Knight, G Lear, Zach...the list gets longer... ;-) Yeh. No complaints here. Dave's def a fave of mine, no doubt. Chick def digs him. And from the drumrs CC has played/plays w, well, that says enough for me. [img]cool.gif[/img]

I think the biggest complimtent I can give the guy is, altho i can hear subtle influences, & mainly a Gaddish one, he sounds like HIMSELF & NO other. When you hear him, you KNOW it's him. Single-handedly almost inspired a whole new 'revolution' of sorts in rhythm pertaining to music.

In this respect, i put him in the bag w the Vinnies, Tonys, Buddys, Elvins, Blakeys, Haynes, Fosters, Deejs, Ersks, Hamiltons, Barons, Blades, DiCensos, Jeffs, Tains, Stewarts [Bill & Copeland ;-)], Cobhams, Lennys, Ndugus, Airtos, Acunas, Hakims, Kennedys, Husbands, Wackermans, Triloks, Phillips, Virgils, & Bozzios [i think we git da picha'] of the world...

He has his OWN thing going on. The guy has long now achieved awa maintained an official state of excellence in my book. He ain't following ANYBODY or any trend - he's SETTING them.

Aw, nevermind what i just said. He just plain s*x [I know you guys nec never said THAT]...

...NOT. /;-p

Wrong..Dave plays quite a bit of 4 over 3 stuff, and his beat displacements can suggest 9 in 4. The complex mathematical underpinnings of Vinnie's phrasing are not there, but there are plenty of examples of decent pocket imo. I do think taking the precision factor to an extreme can make for horrible 'music' however.

Conversely but similarly, 3 over 4 too...Yes, he tends to play w the accents & shifting the pulse by a 16th or whatever, implying a polyrhythmic nature, but I've heard him play them. He usually plays them at some point over the existing groove, preferring this over playing one rhythm against another limbs' meter [but he does this AW]. He's just a little diff than a cat like Vinnie, or moreso, Virg. Not as blatant, i think, as a guy like Virg, who is more specific awa obvious w the PR'ic thing. Hope that made some [any] sense.
